WOBCOM Selects Motorola as Key Technology Provider for Broadband Transport Network Upgrade

KOLN, Germany, May 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. today announced that WOBCOM, the leading broadband service provider in Wolfsburg Germany, has selected Motorola to upgrade its existing Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) transport network with the Motorola Multiservice Broadband Transport (MBT 5000) platform. The MBT 5000 enables the delivery of advanced data services such as fast Ethernet in a rapid, efficient and cost effective way to consumers.

The Motorola MBT 5000 enhanced Ethernet applications include a variety of services such as Internet access, Local Area Network (LAN) - LAN internet private line and Virtual Private Network (VPN) capabilities. These applications will create opportunities for WOBCOM to deliver carrier-class service packages to customers over a fully redundant SDH network.
Utilizing a distributed switching architecture, the Motorola MBT 5000 reduces the capital and operational expenditure required by service providers to provide enhanced services in the existing network infrastructure and operational support systems (OSS).
"It is essential that we have the flexibility to offer a wide range of services for our customers without the need for additional routers and media converters. Motorola's MBT 5000 fits perfectly into our system as it maintains a large amount of redundancy, utilizes a user friendly Network Management- System and offers us a reliable, competitive product to meet all of our customer needs," says Hans-Jurgen Dargel, chief technology officer, WOBCOM.
"It is important for companies such as WOBCOM to have the right technology in place to enable it to take advantage of the exploding demand for new advanced broadband applications," said Paul King, vice president and general manager, Motorola -- Europe, Middle East and Africa. "Products such as Motorola's MBT 5000 platform improve the cost and bandwidth efficiency of growing transport networks and provide opportunity to take advantage of this increased demand."
WOBCOM has provided both business and residential telecom services to the Wolfsburg area of Germany since 1997. With a rapidly increasing subscriber base and a need for advanced voice and data services, WOBCOM is collaborating with Motorola to upgrade its network to improve resilience and reliability as WOBCOM increases the availability of multiple high-speed data connections to its customers.
Motorola's new infrastructure products will be showcased at ANGA Cable 2004 (KOLN, Germany) at the Motorola stand B4, Hall 13.1.
