Smugmug Announces Online Photo Sharing for Booming Camera Phone Market

Smugmug today announced an innovative new service for millions of camera phone users to easily share photos with friends, family, and business associates directly from a phone to their online photo gallery. The new capabilities are included free with any smugmug.com subscription.

Camera phone photographers can now simply email their favorite in-the-field pictures, along with any captions they may wish to add, to their smugmug.com account. Smugmug's new software engine automatically arranges the images into stylish, online albums for immediate sharing and later customization.

"Camera phones are wildly popular and are enabling everyday cell phone users to capture special or opportune moments and images that might have otherwise passed because a traditional camera was not available," said Chris MacAskill, co-founder of Smugmug. "Now, it's easier to share a picture from a phone than to place a call, and we developed a way for cell phone subscribers to store and share all of their photographs directly from the camera without ever having to use a PC."

A new study from InfoTrends Research Group projects that worldwide unit sales of camera phones will reach nearly 150 million in 2004. Sales of camera phones are expected to experience a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 55% through 2008 to 656 million units. Rapid adoption of camera phones worldwide will generate an additional 29 billion digital images captured this year.

"Worldwide camera phone sales will account for just over a quarter of all mobile phone sales this year," said Jill Aldort, Senior Research Analyst of Internet Imaging Trends at InfoTrends Research Group. "More consumers are purchasing camera phones - some as their first digital camera - and are experimenting with taking, sending, and even printing photos. Smugmug is providing these users with an easy way to share and store their photos alongside with their collection of other images saved at Smugmug."

Smugmug.com is an award-winning and fast-growing new online photo community. Unlike traditional photo sites that are focused on selling prints and which provide limited photo sharing, Smugmug's center of gravity is great sharing. Its photo galleries are free from ads, spam and pop-ups. Users can customize their own look and navigation, and they have options that no print-focused sites offer, such as the ability to download high-resolution photos for printing on their own printers. Smugmug makes it easy to arrange, caption, crop and customize. One click is all it takes to view photos the right size for user's monitors in albums renowned for simplicity and style.
