2Wire Poll Reveals Digital Lifestyle Habits
SAN JOSE, Calif., June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- One in four (24%) American broadband subscribers with home networks will avoid a vacation destination if it lacks broadband connectivity. Over half (56%) will check their email almost daily while on vacation this year. Two-thirds (69%) will be more tempted to work from home this summer if they can get online wirelessly from their own backyards.
The results of a poll by 2Wire, Inc., the provider of broadband service platforms, suggest that broadband connectivity is permeating all aspects of subscribers' lives, with availability of Internet access strongly influencing vacation destinations, daily routines and working practices.
The company surveyed 400 broadband subscribers with home networks throughout May and June 2004. When asked how they feel when Internet access is unavailable for a prolonged period, 60% of respondents said they feel agitated, while 33% said they're bored. Only 2% said they are relieved to be off-line. Almost two-thirds (61%) said they need Internet access more frequently than a year ago.
The survey also revealed that 55% of respondents consider checking email an essential part of their morning ritual, compared with the 38% who said eating breakfast was vital and 11% who prioritize reading the newspaper in the morning. In the evening, 30% say checking email is the first thing they do when they get home from work -- almost as many as the 37% who say the first thing they do is ask their spouse or other household member how their day was.
The results showed that the flexibility of wireless home networks is encouraging people to take office work outdoors, with 42% of respondents saying they have made use of backyard broadband access, and 69% admitting they would be more tempted to work from home on a sunny day if they could get online while outdoors.
"The flexibility of wireless home networking and the availability of hotspots is contributing to the development of an always-connected digital lifestyle," said Brian Sugar, vice president of marketing at 2Wire. "As setting up and managing wireless home networks becomes easier, ubiquitous broadband access is becoming an essential part of the daily routine of many subscribers. Contrary to the belief that being constantly 'connected' is stressful, the results of this survey indicate that many people are more able to relax and enjoy themselves when they can get online regardless of their location, even while on vacation."
