2Wire Technology Underpins New DSL Industry Standard

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- A protocol developed by 2Wire, a provider of broadband service platforms for the DSL market, has become the basis of a new industry standard being introduced by the DSL Forum today. The CPE WAN Management Protocol, also referred to as 'TR-069,' creates an industry standard for the management of devices such as gateways and modems.
"We greatly appreciate the work of the DSL Forum and the collaborative effort of its member companies in bringing this standard to completion," said Brian Hinman, president and CEO of 2Wire. "TR-069 will be a key component in allowing DSL service providers to bring a wide variety of broadband services to market, helping to enable the triple-play of data, voice, and media applications."
2Wire's Component Management System (CMS) is the industry's first TR-069-compliant backend management system and the company's HomePortal(R) residential gateway is the industry's first TR-069-compliant intelligent customer premises equipment (CPE) device.
CMS includes several components specifically developed to address the needs of the company's service provider partners, including the Element Management System (EMS), the Services Management System (SMS), business analytics and reporting, and professional services that integrate these elements into providers' existing infrastructure. Detailed information on these components of CMS can be found at http://www.2wire.com/.
"We published our CMS protocol to the open community back in December 2002 as a proposed standard," said Pat Romano, 2Wire's vice president of engineering and CTO. "It has been an honor collaborating with DSL market leaders to evolve this technology into a ratified protocol. Our CMS has been managing intelligent CPE for the past four years, now totaling over 1.5 million gateways, with more than 30 service providers worldwide. We now intend to facilitate TR-069 adoption by making our CMS available to other CPE vendors, to test their devices for industry standard compliance."
"An industry-wide standard for interoperability and management of DSL access and networking devices is a momentous development," said Matt Bross, Group Chief Technology Officer of British Telecom. "This type of collaboration, between equipment manufacturers and service providers, demonstrates that the entire industry is driving toward delivering innovative solutions to the customer. Furthermore, the timing is right for the implementation of BT's 21st century network and system transformation programme, which focuses on enabling the management of multiple vendor devices and deploying an innovative range of services to our customers."
