Forty-Five Percent of Enterprises Cite Wireless Carriers as Preferred Vendors for Wireless Data Solutions, According to Yankee Group Survey
BOSTON --(Business Wire)-- June 22, 2004 --
Enterprise service capabilities and IT partnerships will help differentiate competing carriers
As carriers attempt to deliver wireless data solutions to businesses, they will both compete with and partner with traditional IT suppliers. Carriers will need to fight for face time with customers, build credibility, and position themselves with strategic partners that have the most presence in the enterprise.
Carriers also have an opportunity to lead the charge into wireless data. The Yankee Group Corporate Wireless Survey reveals enterprise decision-makers prefer carriers as their primary vendors of wireless data solutions.
AT&T Wireless and Verizon Wireless command the lead on the list of preferred carriers. However, enterprises are far from monogamous: Most have formal relationships with multiple wireless carriers (63 percent) and almost one-third (29 percent) have formal relationships with three or more carriers. That means market challengers such as Sprint PCS and Nextel still have opportunity to make the list.
"To succeed in wireless voice and data, carriers first have to deliver the basics: cost, coverage and quality," says Roberta Wiggins, Wireless/Mobile United States research fellow. "However, as our survey data also shows, service and solutions play a part in the decision-making process as well. Ultimately, carriers need to broaden their capabilities to include enterprise-class levels of account support and work with IT partners to deliver applications and demonstrate the value of their networks.
"With the advent of Wi-Fi in the enterprise, traditional enterprise data service providers are redefining remote access to embrace the local area," Wiggins says. "Corporations will also need support in managing remote users on the office campus. To be competitive, wireless carriers need to configure mobile solutions that address both wide- and local-area requirements of enterprise customers."
