Adesta Selected to Design and Build $15 Million Southside Virginia Network for Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative

OMAHA, Neb., June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Adesta, LLC, a multi-discipline infrastructure service provider and integrator, today announced that it has been awarded a contract from the Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative (MBC) valued at over $15 million to design and build 400-miles of a regional, open-access telecommunications infrastructure in Southside Virginia. The Regional Backbone Initiative (RBI) network will connect four cities, 20 counties and 56 industrial parks, and provide high-speed Internet access to nearly 700,000 citizens and more than 19,000 businesses throughout the Commonwealth.

"Adesta is proud to be a part of the Regional Backbone Initiative project," said Bob Sommerfeld, president of Adesta. "It is a perfect fit for our skills and experience. As much a flagship project for Adesta, this large-scale deployment of fiber will provide Virginia with a unique platform for government users, along with service providers and enterprise customers. The availability of these broadband services will be key to improving the quality of life, increasing the labor pool for businesses considering relocating to the area, and drawing attention to the business friendly environment of Virginia."
RBI will connect the cities of Danville, Emporia, Lynchburg and Martinsville, as well as the counties of Amelia, Appomattox, Bedford, Brunswick, Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Franklin, Greensville, Halifax, Henry, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Prince Edward and Sussex.
Adesta's portion will consist of constructing approximately 400 miles of fiber-optic network with 48 to 60 strands of dedicated fiber backbone. Adesta will provide and install an advanced, open-access, fiber-optic SONET system, with an OC-192 backbone and OC-3 connections to approximately 80 endpoints across the southern and northern segments of the network. These end points will initially be served with 12- to 24-strand fiber-cable links providing an OC-3 (155-Mbit/sec) connection to industrial parks and other points of interests such as business development centers, community colleges and hospitals. Portions of the rest of the network will consist of leased fiber to Tier 1 network interconnection points in Northern Virginia and North Carolina.
In addition to construction services, Adesta will also provide operations, management, maintenance and marketing after the network is completed, under a separate agreement valued at approximately $9 million.
Largely funded by the Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission, and coordinated by the Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative, a non-profit entity formed to deploy broadband services such as high-speed Internet in Southside, the Regional Backbone Initiative network will link rural areas with high-tech telecom services in urban areas and help to revitalize poor regions that suffer high unemployment by adding new high-paying jobs.
The Regional Backbone Initiative network will provide rural communities in Southern Virginia access to competitive broadband telecommunication providers and promote economic development. When completed, the regional network will connect 20 counties and 56 industrial parks in Southside Virginia, which has lost considerable manufacturing jobs during the recession. Moreover, the network will serve as a financial model for communities across the nation seeking to duplicate long-term economic growth and vitality in other depressed rural communities.
