SIPquest Delivers a Handset-Only Software Solution for WiFi Fast Handoffs; With Less Than 10ms Handoff Latency, SIPquest Delivers a Vendor-Neutral Software Solution Ideal for VoWLAN Roaming.

OTTAWA, Canada --(Business Wire)-- June 16, 2004 -- SIPquest Inc. (www.sipquest.com), a leading developer of Voice over IP (VoIP) software based on Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), today announced the general availability of SIPquest Fast WiFi Handoff. This new application is non-proprietary software that resides on a WiFi-enabled handset and allows VoIP over WiFi roaming; essentially providing a user the freedom to move from one access point to another without disruption in their Voice-over-WiFi call.

Until now, when users of WiFi devices moved out of range from one access point into the range of another the handoff latency could be anywhere from 400 to 600ms - a delay that is not acceptable for Voice and normally resulting in the call connection to be dropped. The SIPquest software is composed of algorithms that reduce the latency between access points to less than 10 milliseconds, independent of the manufacturer of the access points used. This software, from the company with the industry's broadest SIP-based software offering, will be demonstrated at SuperComm 2004 in Chicago, June 22-24th.

Some solutions do exist from the manufacturers of WiFi devices. The manufacturers have addressed the problem with proprietary solutions embedded directly into the access points. The method allows users to roam but locks the enterprise into a vendor-specific solution.

"Our approach to the challenge of WiFi roaming and the need for fast handoffs is unique in the industry," said Alain Mouttham, chief executive officer, SIPquest Inc. "By solving the problem on the client device we remove the problem from the already complex process of setting up the network infrastructure. It provides more freedom to the end consumer of WiFi devices and provides greater reliability and flexibility to users."

WiFi device manufacturers can embed the SIPquest non-proprietary software solution into their devices and offer their customers the freedom to roam within an enterprise (buildings, campuses), across hotspots and in locations where cellular technology is not allowed, such as hospitals.
