AMD Helps Propel USPS Cycling Team to Best Start Ever; AMD Technology Rides with Team to Philadelphia for Last Stateside Appearance Prior to the Tour de France
PHILADELPHIA --(Business Wire)-- June 4, 2004 -- Halfway through its first year as the Official Technology Partner of Lance Armstrong and the United States Postal Service Pro Cycling Team, which is presented by Berry Floor, AMD (NYSE:AMD) is helping the five-time defending Tour de France champion's team shave seconds off their race times. The team boasts 18 wins in 2004 compared with just one win at this point last year.
"We are thrilled that AMD is partnering in our efforts this season, and we especially welcome the improvements their technology have enabled," said Johan Bruyneel, sports manager for the USPS team. "When race victory is determined by a matter of seconds, this team relies on the cutting-edge technology that AMD provides to give us a competitive advantage."
AMD solutions for design, testing and communications will continue to power the team this Sunday, June 6, at the 20th Wachovia USPRO Championship in Philadelphia. This 156-mile, six-hour event will be the last major U.S. race for the team before Armstrong pursues an unprecedented sixth Tour de France title next month.
AMD Opteron(TM) processor-powered workstations, AMD Athlon(TM) processor-based notebooks, and Spansion(TM) Flash memory all contribute to the team's race-day success. Additionally, during pre-race wind-tunnel testing, AMD Opteron and AMD Athlon processors enabled Armstrong and the team to monitor the effects of body position, bike component position, and equipment relative to air turbulence.
"AMD enables so much of what happens behind the scenes," added Dan Osipow, the team's director of corporate communications and events. "From laptops that help us interpret training data to workstations that help us design apparel and equipment to two-way radios that we use to communicate race strategy, all of our AMD processor-powered technology has been critical to our success this season."
"AMD is proud to play a crucial role in the efforts of Lance Armstrong and the USPS team," said Henri Richard, AMD's executive vice president, worldwide sales and marketing. "In the sport of cycling, as in the world of business, when performance matters, champions depend on AMD."
