Is Distance Dead? ThoughtWorks Provides Insight into Challenges of Distributed Development, Offshore Outsourcing in Cutter's Executive Report

CHICAGO --(Business Wire)-- June 4, 2004 -- Matthew Simons, a senior consultant for leading transnational IT professional services firm ThoughtWorks, Inc., provides business and IT leaders with a better approach to offshore outsourcing of software development in an Executive Report published by Cutter Consortium titled, "Distributed Agile Development and the Death of Distance."

According to Simons, the rapid growth in outsourcing, especially offshore outsourcing of development work, opens the door to a host of problems that come with having a far-flung development environment.

"Software development teams around the world have been trying to solve the riddle of distributed development for years," Simons explains. "The problem is so thorny because software development is, at its core, highly dependent on effective communication."

"The offshoring of complex, custom software projects has left many buyers disillusioned when they realize the system did not meet their expectations, nor was it as cost effective as promised. This is because the methodologies used failed to address several critical areas, including the impact of distributed teams."

In his article, Simons suggests companies explore a relatively new approach for software development called distributed agile.

"Distributed agile development will enable companies to execute strategically important projects swiftly and cost effectively by bringing resources to bear regardless of where in the world they happen to call home," Simons says. "Distance may not be dead, but distributed agile development can make the world seem like a smaller place for your software development teams."

To find out more about basic agile concepts, strategies for dividing work between multiple teams and the possible benefits to your organization, access an online version of the article at www.thoughtworks.com/us/library or www.cutter.com/sourcing/thoughtworks.html.
