Broadvox'TM' Selects Mediatrix'R' 2102 Residential VoIP Access Device to Drive Home-Based VoIP Telephony

CLEVELAND & MONTREAL --(Business Wire)-- July 12, 2004 --

Mediatrix' Breakthrough Technology Enables Home Phones, Faxes, And PC or Router to Share Single Broadband Connection

Broadvox(TM), a leading VoIP telephone services provider, and Mediatrix Telecom, Inc., a leader in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) access technology, today announced that Broadvox has chosen the Mediatrix 2102 Residential VoIP Access Device as the core enabling platform for its Internet-based residential telephony services. The Mediatrix 2102, a breakthrough VoIP gateway, will enable Broadvox subscribers to place telephone calls, send/receive faxes, and simultaneously surf the Internet on one or more PCs, using a single residential broadband connection.

Unveiled in March of this year, the Mediatrix 2102 Residential VoIP Access Device simplifies residential IP telephony for service providers and customers. Its patent-pending Transparent Address Sharing (TAS) technology, which enables multiple devices to have access to the Internet simultaneously, is at the heart of the plug and play, built-in design of this device.

"Mediatrix is a respected name in the VoIP gateway arena. As a leader in enterprise VoIP gateways, I knew that the Mediatrix 2102 would be a reliable, feature-rich choice for our residential deployment," said Jeff Williams, Chief Information Officer for Broadvox. "In addition to outstanding quality and support, Mediatrix will enable Broadvox to present several industry firsts in a residential offering-Public IP pass-through, T.38 fax support, dual port compressed CODEC, and a superior quality-of-service offering."

"This distribution agreement with Broadvox, a leading provider of a complete range of telecommunications services, for the major deployment of the Mediatrix 2102, represents a key milestone in our penetration strategy of the residential market", said Marc Shapiro, Vice President of Sales and Business Development for Mediatrix. "This strategic relationship underlines our continuous commitment to providing high value, high quality and cost-effective VoIP products to our customers. The residential VoIP market needed a cost-effective and reliable platform that would allow more and more residential customers to benefit from low-rate phone services by migrating to IP telephony, while allowing service providers to also increase their revenues."

The Mediatrix 2102 is quickly proving to be an ideal choice for service providers who wish to immediately deploy high-value IP telephony services because the unit requires little end-user intervention. In addition to its TAS technology, the device can automatically download its encrypted configuration files to provide secure auto-provisioning and can be remotely managed through industry standards. It also features built-in QoS (Quality of Service) to ensure superior quality voice transmission.

With the deployment of the Mediatrix 2102, Broadvox is able to implement an Integrated Access Device (IAD) built to its own specifications, enabling two simultaneous calls using compressed voice. According to Williams, the solution will result in fewer dropped calls for Broadvox users.

"Unlike many other vendors' Integrated Access Devices, the Mediatrix 2102 allows two simultaneous calls using G.729 - a compressed standard that consumes approximately 30 kbps of bandwidth," Williams states. "With other vendors' units, more bandwidth is required because the first call uses a compressed standard whereas the second call uses a non-compressed standard. This increased bandwidth requirement can result in clipping, echo and dropped calls during periods of high congestion. Mediatrix enables Broadvox to ensure that two simultaneous calls can occur with very high quality."

In his comments on Broadvox' choice of Mediatrix, Williams noted that both companies are strong proponents of telephony open standards. "Out of many endpoints we've worked with, we found Mediatrix' implementation of Session Initiation Protocol very stable and compatible with our internal infrastructure," he said.
