Voice Over Packet Traffic To Reach 1.4 Trillion Minutes By 2008

National and international long distance voice over packet (VoP) traffic will grow from 161 billion minutes of use (MOUs) in 2003 to 1.4 trillion MOUs in 2008. "Voice over Packet Basic Services: Traffic Analysis and Market Trends," a new report from Probe Group, forecasts the market for VOP services and their impact on the traditional voice market.

IP telephony is moving into the mainstream, especially for international voice traffic. "VOP has reached penetration levels of 5% in the domestic long distance market and 18% in the international market," says John Marcus, Probe Group Vice President, Business Data Systems. "This trend will continue. By 2008 we expect to see penetration levels as high as 64% for international traffic."

"TDM traffic reached its peak in 2003," Marcus continued. "The largest carriers of international TDM traffic are also now carrying significant amounts of VoP traffic; that such traffic will continue to migrate to the newer platform is inevitable, the only question remaining is how fast it will happen."

Probe's recent report, "Voice over Packet Basic Services: Traffic Analysis and Market Trends," analyzes the migration from TDM to packet based voiced service. Included are regional forecasts for the domestic and international long distance markets. This report is part of the Voice Over Packet Markets service, which provides ongoing coverage and analysis of the global voice over packet service and equipment markets.
