Smart Card Ttechnology to facilitate passage between Gaza and Israel

Every day more than 120,000 Palestinian workers cross the border between Gaza and Israel. A month ago, a female suicide bomber destroyed the Erez checkpoint and killed three Israeli soldiers and a civilian. To improve security and reduce the daily human drama at the border, Palestinians are now being issued and soon will be using a special card to improve their daily crossing.

OTI's "Smart Card" looks similar to a standard plastic credit card, but has a microchip imbedded in the card, which contains identity documents, biometric hand and face geometry, fingerprints and a photograph of the bearer. Moreover, it's contactless, allowing speedier passage, can have its contents updated, and is tamperproof.

Contactless Smart Card Advantages

- High Speed access and reduced maintenance costs.
- Robust Security, supporting multiple applications and authentications.
- The Flexibility to update and incorporate multiple applications.

In addition to the highly volatile Erez border crossing, the OTI contactless “Smart Card” technology will be incorporated in the China National ID Project and is being proposed as a way to improve security at US airports and US border crossings. The government of Honduras recently decided to implement a smart card program for its 400,000 registered gun owners in an effort to control the use of an estimated 3 million unregistered weapons in the country.
