NEEDHAM, Mass. --(Business Wire)-- Dec. 22, 2004 --

Standards in Software Modeling, Software Components, And Business Rules will Advance at Meeting in Burlingame, CA, USA, January 31 - February 4, 2005

Members of the Object Management Group(TM) (OMG(TM)) will meet in Burlingame, CA, USA from January 31 to February 4, 2005, at a meeting sponsored by The Boeing Company (www.boeing.com) to advance the organization's standards work and attend topical information days and tutorials.

Robotics Showcase

On Monday, January 31, OMG's emerging Robotics Special Interest Group will host a day of presentations on the need for standard MDA(R)-based component architecture and set of interfaces for consumer robotics. Following a keynote by Dr. Paolo Pirjanian, Chief Scientist, Evolution Robotics, the day includes presentations from NEDO, iRobot, AIST, mBus, and others, and concludes with a panel discussion on standards in Robotics.

Knowledge-Based Engineering (KBE) Information Day

On Wednesday, February 2, OMG's Manufacturing Technology and Industrial Systems (ManTIS) Domain Task Force (DTF) will host a day of presentations on the need for interoperability standards in KBE. Speakers from NIST, PDES Inc., Boeing, NASA, and vendor companies will discuss requirements and present case studies. At the end of the day, a panel will discuss the role of OMG's current KBE standardization effort in manufacturing.

Other Information Days and Seminars

On Monday, January 31, OMG's MDA FastStart program will host a seminar on "Bringing in MDA." On Thursday morning, February 3, OMG's Model Integrated Computing PSIG will host a focus day on Aspect-Oriented Modeling. Also on Thursday, all day, OMG will host a day of presentations on "Using MDA Techniques for Enterprise Security Services Integration and Management".

Modeling and Modernization Standards

OMG's Analysis and Design Platform Task Force (PTF) will review draft specifications for a MOF(TM) 2.0 Facility and Lifecycle standard, MOF 2.0 Versioning and Development Lifecycle, Ontology Definition Metamodel, and UML(R) Profile for Systems Engineering. The Architecture-Driven Modernization PTF will review a draft specification for a Knowledge Discovery Metamodel.

Software Infrastructure Standards Work

The Middleware and Related Services PTF will review revised draft specifications for Quality of Service (QoS) for CORBA(R) Components, Streams for CORBA Components, and Web Services for Enterprise Collaboration. If these drafts meet member requirements, they will start the series of votes leading to adoption. The Real-Time, Embedded, and Specialized Systems PTF will review revised draft specifications for High Performance Enablers and Model Based Testing and Debugging, and plans to start the series of votes leading to final adoption. This group will also start work on new adoption processes for Fault Tolerance for Minimum and Real-time CORBA systems, and a UML Profile for modeling of Real-Time, Embedded, and Specialized Systems.

Industry-Specific Domain Standards Work

The Business Enterprise Integration Domain Task Force (DTF) will review revised draft specifications for the Business Semantics of Business Rules standard. The C4I (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence) DTF will review revised draft specifications for a Generic Sonar Interface. The Finance DTF will work on requirements for their proposed electronic payment gateway architecture standard. The Healthcare DTF expects to complete its standards roadmap and start drafting requirements for its first MDA-based specification, working in liaison partnership with healthcare standards body HL7. The Life Science Research DTF will review a revised draft specification for a Biochemical Pathways representation. And finally, the Space DTF will discuss plans for its next meeting, co-located with space standards body CCSDS, to take place at the next OMG meeting coming up in Athens, Greece, the week of April 11-15.

OMG Tutorials, Software Demonstrations

Three tutorials will survey and highlight OMG specifications and technology areas, including a "Survey of OMG Specifications", "Introduction to UML 2.0", and "Overview of the Software Communications Architecture". Meeting sponsor The Boeing Company will speak at a plenary session on Wednesday, February 2.

Open and freely available, OMG specifications have been implemented by many vendors, universities, and other groups. In Burlingame on Tuesday and Wednesday, a number of implementors will display their products at a central demonstration area.

UML Certification Examinations

Attendees may take the organization's UML Certification examinations during the meeting week at a site near the meeting hotel. Attendees receive a 15% discount on tests taken during the meeting week. No pre-registration is necessary. For more information about the certification program, see www.omg.org/uml-certification.

This meeting description is based on preliminary information. OMG Task Forces will finalize their agendas for the meeting during the week of January 17th and post them at www.omg.org/agendas.

OSDL Enterprise Linux Summit Co-located

The OSDL Enterprise Linux Summit will take place Monday through Wednesday, co-located at the Burlingame Hyatt. Featuring Linux notables Linus Torvalds, Mitch Kapor, and others, the Summit emphasizes Linux in the Enterprise. This event requires separate registration, available at www.osdllinuxsummit.org.
