Access Your Driving History Record Online at www.Maine.gov

AUGUSTA, Maine --(Business Wire)-- Dec. 22, 2004 -- Requesting a copy of your driving record is now a simple process, thanks to a new online service available through Maine's official Web site at www.Maine.gov. Public motor vehicle driving records for licensed drivers in Maine can now be viewed electronically through a cooperative service offered by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and the Information Resource of Maine (InforME).

Public driving records requested through this new online service contain information for the last three years. The federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act of 1994 provides an important safeguard to ensure that only public information, and not private information, is released on a driving record. An individual's address and Social Security number, for example, are not public and are not released in driving records.

The online record request service follows the same standards as the existing mail and fax services for driver records, and all services adhere to the rules of the Driver's Privacy and Protection Act to shield the privacy of Maine's drivers while simultaneously providing access to public information.

The cost to purchase driver history records online is $7 per report, which is equal to the cost of most faxed reports. To access any report, requestors will need to provide either the driver license number or the name and date of birth of the individual for whom the record is being requested. Records can be printed immediately, and Visa and MasterCard payments are processed through Maine.gov's secure payment server.

"With this new system for checking driving records, the Department of the Secretary of State is once again expanding its substantial offering of online services available to the people of Maine," said Dan Gwadosky, Maine Secretary of State. "The Bureau of Motor Vehicles now offers an online driver license renewal and replacement service, online vehicle registration renewals, and many other online services."

Maine's Driver Record Check System is a service of the Department of the Secretary of State in partnership with InforME, Maine's private-sector partner and official Web portal provider. All online services and official state Web pages can be accessed from the state portal at www.Maine.gov. In October 2004, Maine's portal was named the best state web site in the nation by the Center for Digital Government.
