University of Advancing Technology Sponsors Segway Across America
TEMPE, Ariz. --(Business Wire)-- Aug. 20, 2004 -- The University of Advancing Technology (UAT) announces its sponsorship in the American Segway Campaign. In this campaign, five documentary film makers begin a crusade to cross the United States solely on a Segway Human Transporter. Originating in Seattle, the group anticipates the crossing of the United States to take almost three months. The five will conclude their journey in Boston, and then release a feature-length online documentary.
Daily releases of footage with audio and video, including photos, will be released online at the American Segway site. The group has chosen this particular means in an effort to showcase the possibilities of alternative fuel modes of transportation. The Segway Human Transporter was conceptualized and created by Dean Kamen. Departing Seattle at an average speed of 10 mph, the participants hope to chronicle the interactions they have with people they meet along the journey.
Who are these five members traversing the United States on a Segway? The team member offering his extraordinary sense of adventure and creativity is Josh Caldwell, who enjoys pushing the envelope. Master photographer and world traveler Hunter Weeks enjoys capturing elements of humanity that are often off the beaten path in remote locations. The digital sound master of the five-member group is Pat Armstrong, who has been in the digital realm of sound for many years. J. Fred Keough, writer and independent filmmaker, has an innate ability to gauge the pulse of the American pop-culture scene and moves trends to reality. University of Advancing Technology student Alon Waisman completes this team, offering a fresh approach as a student, entrepreneur and Segway enthusiast.
The event began on Aug. 5, 2004, as the group departed Seattle. At press time, the five are currently in Grangerville, Idaho after 10 days on the road and 446.0 miles traveled. In an effort to slow down in this fast-paced, technology-driven world to speak to those they encounter along the way, the five crusaders have been offered 127 invitations to stay at the homes of the locals they have encountered.
