U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Selects XTEND's Enterprise Alert System to Improve Safety and Emergency Response Time
NEW YORK & MONTREAL --(Business Wire)-- Aug. 9, 2004 -- Advanced Public Safety Solution Protects Employees and Visitors at New Virginia Campus Location
XTEND Communications Corp., a provider of computer and local area network-based telecommunications systems for public safety, healthcare, hospitality and corporate environments, today announced at the APCO* International Annual Tradeshow and Exhibition, that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has chosen the Enterprise Alert(TM) emergency notification system to enhance 911 capabilities throughout its facility in Northern Virginia.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark campus includes seven newly constructed buildings, each having separate entrances and street addresses with a single private branch exchange (PBX) phone system to handle the communication needs of each office. In the event of an emergency, 911 calls are routed from the PBX to the local Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for dispatch to the appropriate emergency response personnel, be it police, paramedics or the fire department. Because the estimated 8,000 individual phone extensions are not differentiated by the PBX telephone system, all calls coming from the facility would be identified to the PSAP as one street address, hindering the ability to properly identify the exact location of victim callers.
To overcome this public safety quandary and ensure the well-being of staff and visitors, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office chose XTEND's Enterprise Alert solution. A software application running on standard computer equipment, Enterprise Alert enables the 911 call center to dispatch emergency personnel to the exact location of the victim, ensuring fast and accurate response times that save lives.
The Enterprise Alert application receives phone extension information from the PBX and creates and maintains a comprehensive database of direct inward dial (DID) numbers assigned to each phone extension. These numbers are then given an automatic location information (ALI) classification by the local exchange carrier (LEC), as well as the critical ANI for proper location identification. The local database is automatically updated in the event of personnel moves, additions or changes. Additionally, Enterprise Alert notifies the LEC to any changes, ensuring ALI information that resides at the carrier's branch office is current and accurate.
"XTEND is committed to providing enhanced telecommunications solutions that address public and campus safety concerns," said William Schwartz, CEO and founder of XTEND Communications. "Our standards-based solutions and flexible architecture offer organizations a low-maintenance, cost-effective alternative to costly proprietary hardware components and can easily scale to meet future government regulations and enhanced 911 needs of an organization."
