Comcast to Trial Motorola Broadband Media Centers With Moxi

KIRKLAND, Wash. and PHILADELPHIA, April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Comcast, the country's leading cable and broadband communications provider, and Digeo, Inc., a leading provider of media center software and services, today announced a planned commercial trial of Motorola Broadband Media Centers (BMC) with Moxi(TM). Deployment of approximately 40,000 integrated dual-tuner DVR (digital video recorder), HDTV (high definition television) Motorola BMCs is slated to begin later this year.

"Comcast is committed to bringing our customers more choice, control and convenience," said Steve Silva, executive vice president of new business development at Comcast. "We're looking forward to working with Digeo and Motorola on the Motorola BMC with Moxi to help us learn more about customer interest in integrated media centers, and the features and functionality that most appeal to them. The Motorola BMC with Moxi platform offers an exciting high-definition DVR that provides a unique user interface."
The Motorola BMC with Moxi is designed specifically to support cable's expanding menu of content and services. Utilizing a powerful processor, internal hard drive, and built-in cable modem, the Motorola BMC with Moxi delivers an exceptional entertainment experience to the home. Designed for casual browsing and rapid search, the Moxi Menu allows viewers instant access to current and future program listings whether they originate from live broadcasts, on-demand programming or their own DVR recordings. The Moxi interface is both easy-to-learn and fun-to-use, giving viewers a much higher level of choice, convenience and control.
"We're pleased that Comcast will be trialing our Moxi solution this year," said Jim Billmaier, chief executive of Digeo. "With the upcoming Charter and Adelphia deployments and this new commitment from Comcast, 2004 is shaping up to be a big year for us with endorsements from three of the top five MSOs planning to deploy Moxi."
"The digital cable infrastructure that we have built with Comcast is capable of expanding and transforming home entertainment options. Our BMC with Moxi turns that potential into reality for cable subscribers today," said Carl McGrath, Motorola vice president and general manager, digital core gateways.
Last summer, Digeo and Motorola announced that Charter Communications had placed an order for 100,000 Motorola BMCs with Moxi. The service is being commercially launched in Rochester, Minn. And, earlier this year, Digeo and Adelphia Communications announced plans to deploy 25,000 Motorola BMCs with Moxi.
"While delivering more functionality, the Motorola BMC with Moxi is easily integrated within the existing digital cable infrastructure, so it can offer opportunities for cable service providers to introduce new products and features," added Billmaier.
