IIJ Launches Emergency Virus Countermeasure Service; Provided as the First Service in the Series of E-Mail Solutions Enhancement

TOKYO --(Business Wire)-- April 15, 2004 -- Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJIE), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced the launch of the Company's new Emergency Virus Countermeasure Service. The service will help customers combat mail-system failures that are caused by viruses. While these types of failures do not often cause a complete system shut-down, they are a major factor influencing overall mail-system performance. The aim of the service is to provide urgent countermeasures against mail-system failures that cannot be prevented with conventional virus scanning while also increasing the mail-system's ability to resist against future failures.

Mass-mailing worm viruses(*1) like MyDoom and Netsky propagate themselves by sending out volumes of e-mail from an infected machine. The system damage that can be caused by viruses is growing every day. Even when companies install virus-scanning and removal functions on company PCs and e-mail systems, the enormous quantity of e-mails created by the virus on the infected machine from the outside can overload systems and prevent normal operation. In extreme cases, when an e-mail system crashes, the ability of a company's operations to function normally can be severely impeded.

On a bad day, IIJ receives hundreds of thousands of virus-infected e-mails from the company's publicly displayed e-mail address, which is 30 to 100 times higher than the number of legitimate emails received. As a result, IIJ has implemented a distribution flow control system and other measures to create an environment in which valid e-mail distribution is not affected. The development of the new Emergency Virus Countermeasure Service benefited from IIJ's extensive experience in operating and maintaining its own e-mail services as well as its commercial mailbox services. This service will be the first service in a series of Total Mail Solutions(*2) that is being rolled out by the IIJ group. Prices will be determined separately based on customer requirements.

The IIJ Group joined the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group (MAAWG) in January 2004 with IIJ America Inc., and IIJ is going to participate in a working group in Japan on this matter. IIJ will move actively against viruses and spam to help create a safe, stable Internet environment for customers.
