Young Men Allege Prescription Drug Risperdal Linked to Abnormal Male Breast Development

Attorney Wendy R. Fleishman of the national plaintiffs' law firm Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP, announced that four young men prescribed the antipsychotic medication Risperdal recently filed separate personal injury lawsuits alleging that Risperdal is a defective and dangerous prescription drug. The complaints were brought against Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Risperdal, in state court in Pennsylvania, where Janssen Pharmaceuticals is located.

The plaintiffs, from the states of Connecticut, Florida, Maryland, and Ohio, were prescribed Risperdal as adolescents. While taking the recommended dosage of Risperdal, each male child plaintiff developed the growth of abnormal breast tissue. In medical terms, this condition is called gynecomastia. This is not merely fatty deposits in the pectoral muscles of the chest, but real breasts that look like women's breasts.

"The bodies of these young men have been permanently mutated by Risperdal. In a young man who is already isolated by his challenges caused by mental issues, the growth of women's breasts on his body in adolescent and teenage years is absolutely devastating," stated Fleishman. "As alleged in the complaint, Janssen knew Risperdal stimulated male breast development and failed to adequately warn physicians, parents, an the adolescents prescribed Risperdal of this side effect. So when the moms and dads gave their consent to add this prescription for their sons, they knew nothing about the potential horrible harm it could cause."

Federal law requires that prescription drug manufacturers fully and accurately disclose information in relation to adverse effects of their medications on the package insert and other labeling, and to include adequate warnings concerning these risks in promotional materials for the medications.

"The master complaint in the Risperdal litigation charges that the defendants manipulated clinical trials to produce results favorable to Risperdal and failed to file accurate and timely reports of adverse events in patients prescribed Risperdal," stated Lieff Cabraser attorney Jeremy J. Troxel, who also represents Risperdal patients. "The complaint further alleges that defendants made false and misleading claims, regarding the risks of Risperdal and failed to issue adequate warnings concerning the dangers of ingesting Risperdal."
