Yearly art auction raises money for Dothan-area charities

Jan 15, 2010 (Dothan Eagle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Art and champagne just seem to go together.

Apparently, local residents seem to like the combination -- they've been supporting Temple Emanu-El's annual art auction for more than 30 years.

The 2010 art auction is set for Saturday, Jan. 23. A preview will begin at 6 p.m., and the auction will start at 7 p.m. Guests can browse the art while sipping champagne and eating hors d'oeuvres, said publicity chair Kay Podem. But for those who can't make the auction or simply don't want to bid, a "second look" event will be held on Sunday.

"It's always a fun event," Podem said.

The auction, hosted by the Temple Emanu-El Sisterhood, is conducted by State of the Art Fundraising Art Auctions in Cleveland, Tenn. The company provides art work for charitable auctions for a number of organizations around the country from Make-A-Wish and Junior Leagues to synagogues and churches. The company delivers work by artists like Yaacov Agam, Salvador Dali, Jim Buckels, Norman Rockwell and Marc Chagall.

According to State of the Art's Web site, prices for paintings and other art work can run from $25 up to $10,000 depending on the piece. Most, however, fall into the range of $50 to $350.

The temple Sisterhood gives a portion of the proceeds to local charities like the Houston-Love Memorial Library, Landmark Park, Wiregrass Area United Way Food Bank, the Cultural Arts Center, Wiregrass Humane Society, House of Ruth and the George Washington Carver Interpretive Museum. How the 2010 proceeds will be used will be decided by the Sisterhood's members in April.

The event, Podem said, always has a good turnout, drawing regulars each year and even attracting a new faces.

"People from the community choose to support us and participate in this, and we in return want to give back to the community," Podem said.
