Wind's blowing in favour of turbine

(Hull Daily Mail Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Leading manufacturer Holliday Pigments said today it could follow Croda Chemicals Europe's lead and install its own wind turbine.

Croda plans to build the 125m turbine near its base in Clough Road, north Hull.

It would generate its own electricity supply and help reduce environmentally unfriendly carbon dioxide emissions.

If successful, the turbine would be almost as tall as Holliday Pigments' own chimney, which is a landmark for miles around.

Now Holliday Pigments has welcomed the plans - and says it could follow Croda's example if the turbine is a success.

Gary Walters, Holliday Pigments' sustainability and environmental adviser, said: "Stringent environmental policies and responsible manufacturing processes are integral parts of Holliday Pigments' business practices and we applaud Croda's commitment to the environment and sustainable development by reducing carbon emissions.

"We will be watching with interest the benefits the tower brings to Croda, as it is something we could potentially be looking at going forward." Croda has submitted a planning application to Hull City Council for its wind turbine, which would be two-thirds the height of the Humber Bridge.

If it gets the go-ahead, work could start next year.

The turbine would help Croda cut its multi-million pound fuel bill. It would also ease the pressure on the National Grid, helping to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by reducing the need for power plants that pollute the atmosphere.

Holliday Pigments, which employs about 250 people in Hull, is the world's leading manufacturer of ultramarine blue pigments.

The company prides itself on its environmental protection measures. Its Hull plant uses the latest technology to block sulphur dioxide emissions.

Holliday Pigments' sales and marketing director Steve Bell said: "We are delighted with Croda's efforts in reducing carbon emission for the well-being of the city's environment.

"Looking after the environment is, after all, a global responsibility.

"With projects such as this, Hull is illustrating its commitment to greener manufacturing. Hull is in a strong position to lead the way and show other manufacturing centres how it can be done." [email protected] Links Croda www.croda.com Holliday Pigments www.holliday-pigments.com
