Waterford Institute Acquires Curriculet: Extends Waterford Reading Platform beyond Early Literacy and into Independent Reader Market

Waterford Institute, a nonprofit edtech and research center, today announced the acquisition of Curriculet for an undisclosed amount to further its goal of providing equity in literacy education for all.

Curriculet's platform, a self-guided independent reading program, will become part of the Waterford curriculum and provide students from grades 3 to 6 with a breadth of individualized reading experiences. Students will be able to build on their foundation of early learning and literacy skills gained in Waterford Early Learning's personalized programs for preschool through second grade.

"Waterford builds a foundation of literacy for student success in reading, math and science during the critical preschool through second grade years," said Andy Myers, COO of Waterford Institute. "For the upper elementary grades, Curriculet will enable us to provide instructional content wrapped around books in a way that helps teachers increase the quality and quantity of independent readingexperiences for their students."

Waterford's programs form a natural progression to meet students' individual literacy needs as they grow from pre-literacy to fluency:

  • Waterford SmartStart for preschool aligns with national Head Start and NAEYC curriculum standards and prepares each student for learning to read.
  • Waterford Early Learning for K-2 provides foundational skills in reading, math and science at each child's level and pace. Teacher tools, reports and training further create an ideal personalized learning experience.
  • Curriculet opens a world of literacy to each child at their level. Dynamic instructional content accompanies each text in a way that is engaging for the child and invaluable for the teacher.

A reboot of the Curriculet platform will take place in time for back to school 2017. Waterford plans to offer Curriculet's capabilities grades 3-12, with an initial focus on library breadth and depth for grades 3-6.

"We are thrilled to find the right home for Curriculet to move the great platform we built into its next phase," remarked Jason Singer, founder and CEO of Curriculet. "Pairing Curriculet's independent reading platform with the proven product of Waterford Early Learning provides each child with an ideal path to literacy and a life-long love of reading."
