Walgreens Reminds Patients About Prescription Preparedness in Advance of Hurricane Irma

Walgreens is underscoring the importance of prescription preparedness for its pharmacy patients in areas that may be impacted by Hurricane Irma, currently threatening the southeastern U.S.

The company is offering the following tips for ensuring prescription needs are met for those potentially impacted by the storm.

  1. Follow evacuation orders. Get to a safe location first and then refill your medications at the nearest pharmacy. This allows you to avoid potentially long lines at your local pharmacy, and you won't needlessly delay your evacuation. Walgreens has nearly 8,200 locations nationwide and all locations can access a patient's records, making any Walgreens your neighborhood Walgreens. Individuals can also use the Walgreens mobile app to refill prescriptions and pick up at a nearby pharmacy. Patients can find the nearest Walgreens store by visiting the store locator feature on Walgreens.com, using the Walgreens mobile app or by calling 1-800-WALGREENS. Patients can also contact pharmacy staff through the Pharmacy Chat feature on Walgreens.com and the mobile app.
  2. With a State of Emergency declared in all 67 counties in Florida, pharmacists in the state can refill medications up to a 30-day supply without requiring a prescriber's reill authorization for any non-controlled substance.
  3. Take a waterproof bag with your current medication - even if the bottle is empty. The information on the prescription label will help pharmacy staff with refill requests. Heat, humidity and sunlight can degrade the effectiveness of medicine, so try to protect it from extreme weather conditions.
  4. Keep a written record of your current prescriptions in your valuable papers files. If you are taking several prescription drugs, it's an especially good idea to keep a record of your current dosage and doctor's contact information. Walgreens patients can register online at Walgreens.com and print out this information directly from their patient profile.

In the event Walgreens locations temporarily close due to the hurricane, the company's local field operations teams will work to reopen those locations as soon as possible. Updates on store locations will be available on Walgreens.com and through the Walgreens mobile app.
