[November 24, 2009] Walder honored for 25 years of coaching Tweet WATERTOWN, Nov 24, 2009 (The Daily Republic - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Andes Central assistant coach Jeff Walder was honored for 25 years of coaching Saturday during the Class A and B state volleyball tournament in Watertown. Walder started coaching in 1980 and he has coached volleyball and track at the varsity and junior high levels. He has also coached football and boys' and girls' basketball at the junior high level. Walder was named the Class B assistant volleyball coach of the year in 2002, 2003 and 2004 and he was also named the middle school coach of the year. --Tyndall resident Deb Sternhagen was one of the four officials working the Class A state title match Saturday in Watertown. Other local officials working the 'A' and 'B' tournaments were Darlene Hauck, of Avon; and Beth Conroy and Shane Thill, both of Mitchell. --Wagner senior Keaya Weber set a Class A tournament record with an average of 11.5 assists per set. The setter recorded 115 assists over the course of the Red Raiders' 10-set tournament run. She broke her old record of 10.6 assists per set as well as the state record, set in 2002 by Samantha VandeKamp of Sioux Falls Christian. --Andes Central made its first state appearance since 2003 this year, but a former Eagles standout still is near the top of the list in several statistical categories in Class B. Katrina Brooks is third on the kills list with an average 5.69 per set in 2003. She had 74 kills in 13 sets in that state tournament. She also is second on the digs list with 6.67 per set. Brooks recorded 80 digs in 12 sets in the state tournament in November 2002. Former Parkston standout Kelli Fiegen still holds the record for blocks with an average 1.58 per set in 2007. She finished with 19 blocks in 12 sets that year. She is also fifth in spikes with 5.08 per set in 2007. --Mount Vernon senior Sarah Vermeulen led all of Class B with an average 4.8 kills per set throughout the tournament. She finished with 58 total kills. Weber led Class A in assists and teammate Breanna Cuka led Class A with an average 1.2 blocks per set. She had 12 total blocks. --After being in one location for the past two years, the three classes were split up again for this year's state tournament as Class AA was in Brookings. The 2010 state tournament will be in three locations -- Class B will be in Huron, 'A' in Aberdeen and 'AA' in Yankton -- before going back to a central location in 2011.
