U.S. wants Russia to cancel missile sale

(UPI Top Stories Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)The U.S. State Department has called for an embargo on arms sales to Iran until the country gives up its nuclear ambitions.

Undersecretary of State R. Nicholas Burns especially called on Russia to cancel an agreement to supply Iran with Tor M-1 antiaircraft missiles, The Los Angeles Times reported.

It doesn't stand to reason that Russia would continue with the arms sale, particularly of the type envisioned, Tor missiles, Burns said. Iran is a country that is violating every international agreement it's made on the nuclear issue.

Nikolai Spassky, deputy secretary of the Russian Security Council, said in Moscow that Russia plans to carry out the deal. He said there is no bar on arms sales to Iran unless the U.N. Security Council imposes sanctions.
