US Consumer Safety Commission and Sony recall notebook computers due
to burn hazard
(Telecomworldwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge)
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the Sony
Electronics Inc, announced on 4 September a voluntary recall of some
Sony VAIO RZ series notebook computers as a result of the discovery of
a potential hazard to consumers.
Sony have sold around 73,000 of the computers to date. Fifteen reports
of overheating have been received by the firm, including one incident
where the consumer reportedly received minor burns. The problem is
thought to be caused by incorrectly located wires positioned near the
computer's hinge and/or a dislodged screw in the hinge that can cause a
short circuit and overheating.
The recalled notebook computer models are the VAIO VGN-TZ100 series,
VGN-TZ200 series, VGN-TZ300 series and VGN-TZ2000 series. Not all units
are affected and consumers should contact Sony to determine if their
unit is included in the recall.
The recall is limited to units sold by SonyStyle stores, the Sony
website or authorised Sony dealers between July 2007 and August 2008.
Consumers have been advised to stop using the recalled notebook
computers and contact Sony to determine if their notebook is affected.
The firm will arrange for an inspection and repair, if needed.
