U.S., coalition kill five Afghan militants(UPI Top Stories Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)U.S. and Afghan forces have killed five militants in eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistani border, U.S. military officials said. The fighting in Kunar province Tuesday came amid calls from Afghan officials for Pakistan to do more to crack down on Taliban and al-Qaida fighters along the border between the two countries. Officials in Kabul have expressed concern that the Taliban are using the mountainous and porous border as a hideout. High-ranking leaders in al-Qaida reportedly are also hiding in the area. Coalition and Afghan forces in recent days have been fighting fierce battles against Taliban fighters in the area. On Monday U.S. and Afghan forces also killed five Taliban fighters in Kunar province, near the provincial capital, Asadabad. |
