Pimlico Race Course under quarantineBALTIMORE, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- The Maryland Jockey Club placed Pimlico Race Course on quarantine Saturday due to the recent outbreak of equine herpes virus. The quarantine was to take effect at the end of Saturday's racing, would last until further notice. This is a precautionary measure, said Lou Raffetto, chief operating officer for the Maryland Jockey Club. It is in our best interest to restrict the movement in and out of Pimlico until we see the outcome of the tests on the horse in Barn A. Eleven horses have shown signs of the virus since Jan. 1. The Maryland Department of Agriculture put an Investigational Animal Hold Order on three Pimlico barns. Two horses tested positive for the virus and were euthanized. Eight horses are in isolation and a ninth showed signs of the virus Thursday morning, the Baltimore Sun reported. Racing is being conducted at Pimlico's sister track, Laurel Park. Nearly 500 horses are currently stabled at Pimlico, including nearly 110 affected by the hold orders. |
