UNT to Offer Educational, Entertaining Summer Programs(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) DENTON, Texas, May 16 -- The University of North Texas issued the following news release: From elementary school students to grandparents, the University of North Texas will offer summer programs for almost everyone this year. Some of UNT's popular offerings include a camp in which high school students learn about robotics, a program in which young musicians learn about mariachi music and a two-day program in which grandparents and grandchildren enjoy the college experience together. More details on some of the summer programs offered by UNT for summer 2012 are included below: UNT SUMMER PROGRAMS: June 4 - June 8 Camp Communicate (http://speechandhearing.unt.edu/news/summer-2012-programs) The Meritt Bois D'Arc Ranch, Denton, TX Camp Communicate is a fun?filled summer day camp experience designed for children ages 5 to 12 years with speech, language and hearing disorders. Through a variety of group activities children have opportunities to make new friends and practice communication in a language?rich environment. The campers participate in traditional camp activities, such as horseback riding and fishing at The Meritt Bois D'Arc Ranch in Denton and at UNT's Elm Fork Education Center. June 4 - June 8 Future Bilingual Teachers Academy (http://www.coe.unt.edu/teacher-education-and-administration) UNT Campus and Fort Worth ISD locations UNT and the Fort Worth Independent School District jointly host a summer camp introducing bilingual high school students to the field of teaching and encouraging them to consider a career in bilingual education. About 30 Fort Worth high school students who are proficient in English and Spanish, are in good academic standing and have shown an interest in teaching are chosen to attend the Future Bilingual Teachers Academy, which will be held at UNT and in the Fort Worth ISD June 4 through 8. June 11 - July 13 Elm Fork Education Center Summer Camps (http://efec.unt.edu/explorers-camp-2012-camp-sessions-2) (One-week sessions) UNT Campus, EESAT Building UNT's Elm Fork Education Center hosts a number of week-long summer programs for young scientists. One of the most popular programs is the AstroKid Academy, where third through fifth graders can explore the universe, learn about the physical and mental preparation for space exploration and the science of launching a NASA shuttle into space. June 18 - July 20 RoboCamp (http://capstone.cse.unt.edu/robocamp/) (Four one-week sessions) UNT's Discovery Park, Collin College in Frisco Now in its eighth year, Robocamp is a free, week-long day camp for high school-aged students hosted at UNT's Discovery Park campus. The camp features numerous hands-on activities and experiments in robotics, engineering design, critical thinking and computer programming. Four camp sessions will be offered this summer: two camps specifically for girls, one specifically for boys and a co-ed camp. In 2010 the RoboCamp for Girls program won the Metroplex Tech Titan of the Future-University Level award, which recognizes higher education institutions that encourage students to choose engineering and technology-related disciplines. June 21 - June 22 Grandparents University (http://call.unt.edu/GU) UNT Campus Grandparents University gives multi-generational families the opportunity to experience college life together during the summer. Grandparents and grandchildren (ages 7 - 12) can earn a Grandparents University degree by "majoring" in two topics. Participants have the opportunity to spend the night in a UNT dorm and experience college life. The program is sponsored by UNT's Center for Achievement and Lifelong Learning, and is now in its fourth year. The term Grandparents University is a registered trademark of the United States Patent Office and is used with permission. Grandparents University at the University of North Texas is based on the program which originated in 2001 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Media contact: Leslie Wimmer at 940-565-4835 or [email protected] June 21 - July 21 The Mean Green Workshops (Debate Camps) (http://www.meangreenworkshops.com/workshops.php) UNT Campus A residential summer program at UNT for high school students who are currently competing, or want to compete, in Lincoln-Douglas and policy debate tournaments and who want to increase their skills in parliamentary procedure, writing and researching legislation, and congressional strategy to compete in mock legislative assemblies. More than 200 students attend each summer from Texas and other states, making the Mean Green Workshops the largest debate summer program in Texas. June 25 - July 20 Xbox Game Development Camp (http://www.meangreenworkshops.com/workshops.php) (Two one-week sessions) UNT Discovery Park The Xbox game programming camp is a one-week day camp that will engage middle and high school students in team, project-oriented activities that utilize laptops, XNA Framework (which is provided by Microsoft) and Xbox 360 gaming consoles. Students will learn coding and programming principles and develop an understanding of the role of physics and mathematics in game design. July 8 - July 28 TAMS Summer Math Institute (http://tams.unt.edu/academics/summer-math-institute) UNT Campus SMI is an intensive mathematics program designed for highly motivated middle and high school students who wish to accelerate their mathematics education. Students attend daily classes taught by experienced mathematics teachers in algebra I, algebra II, geometry or pre-calculus. The classroom setting is highly interactive and adapted to each individual student's ability and pace. Students live in a residence hall at UNT. During their free time in the evenings and on weekends, participants have the opportunity to interact with other academically driven peers in fun, educational and recreational activities and field trips. July 14 - July 28 LTC/UAEM Summer Institute UNT Campus About 60 students from the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico in Toluca and about 18 faculty and staff members in the university's English-as-a-Second-Language program will come to UNT for two weeks to work on their English skills in the UNT Department of Linguistics and Technical Communication. The institute is an English immersion program designed to help students become fluent in English and become prepared to study at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend four hours a day, five days a week, in English classes organized by language proficiency. July 24 - July 28 Mariachi Aguilitas Summer Camp (http://music.unt.edu/about/workshops) UNT Campus The Mariachi Aguilitas Summer Camp allows middle school and high school students to learn to better sing and play the guitarron, vihuela, trumpet and violin. Jose Hernandez of Mariachi Sol de Mexico will serve as a guest artist and instructor. The program is offered by the UNT College of Music. The UNT College of Music also offers a variety of other summer workshops, including double bass camps, flute classes, drum major camp, choir camps and more.
