United Internet expects boom in internet telephony (Internettelefonie steht am Anfang )
(Handelsblatt Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)German internet company United Internet is expecting rapid growth in the number of telephone calls made using the internet. In December, United Internet customers made calls totalling 285 million minutes. In 2006, United Internet hopes that the volume of calls using VoIP technology will double to more than 500 million a month. The company revealed that, on average, one in every two customers signing up for high-speed internet packages is also opting for an internet telephone tariff.
However, it is estimated that internet telephony accounted for just 3 per cent of all telephone calls within Germany last year. In France, telecoms group France Telecom recently issued a profit warning due to the increase in VoIP calls. Internet telephony accounted for 15 per cent of private telephone calls in 2005 in France. German telecoms group Deutsche Telekom has confirmed its profit and turnover targets for 2006, but analysts forecast that VoIP could become a major risk for Deutsche Telekom's fixed-line activities in 2008.
