U.N. delegate urges no Iran sanctions yet

(UPI Top Stories Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)There is no current need for punitive measures against Iran, Russia's U.N. ambassador has told reporters.

Ambassador Andrei Denisov said there was no evidence that Iran had failed to comply with the treaty on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

The five permanent U.N. Security Council members began unofficial consultations over the Iranian nuclear situation after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that Tehran possesses nuclear technologies.

The Russian ambassador urged no rushing on the matter, Tass reported. He said further action by the Security Council will depend on conclusions in a report and recommendations by the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
