TradeMe says while use of "ANZAC" domain name for commercial purposes may be illegal, selling of it is not

(IRN News Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Auction site TradeMe says a domain name which is up for sale on its website is not illegal.

A Napier man is trying to sell the website name "anzac.net.nz".

The Ministry of Culture and Heritage has logged on to TradeMe and made it clear to the vendor that the use of the word ANZAC for trade or business purposes is prohibited under the Flags, Emblems and Names Protection Act 1981.

TradeMe business manager Mike O'Donnell says while the use of the domain name for commercial purposes may be illegal, the selling of it is not.

The auction closed at midday with a bid of $5,050.
