Top Indian opposition leader shot in Mumbai+


(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)NEW DELHI, April 22_(Kyodo) _ Pramod Mahajan, a leader of India's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, was shot Saturday morning in Mumbai, the country's commercial capital, according to media reports reaching New Delhi.



Mahajan, general secretary of the BJP, was shot three times by his cousin Pravin Mahajan in Worli in central Mumbai, the reports said.

Seriously injured, Mahajan was taken to the Hinduja hospital and is undergoing an operation, but there is little information available on his condition, the reports said.


His cousin has surrendered to police and has been booked for attempted murder which is believed to have been over a property dispute, family members were quoted as saying.

The BJP leader received one of the three bullets to the chest. Party sources said his condition is serious.

Senior BJP leaders including former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee are rushing to Mumbai, according to media reports.
