Tigo urges regulator to enable fixed number portability [TeleGeography CommsUpdate]

(TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Tigo El Salvador has called on telecoms regulator Superintendencia General de Electricidad y Telecom (SIGET) to implement number portability (NP) for fixed line telephony users as well as for mobile subscribers. La Prensa Grafica quotes Tigo's CEO Marcelo Aleman as saying that the introduction of fixed NP would help to increase competition in the wireline sector. TeleGeography's GlobalComms Database notes that legislation calling for the introduction of NP was first passed in June 2010, but SIGET subsequently postponed its implementation, stating that telecoms operators were not prepared for the change, while a lack of consensus over who will fund the process has led to further delays. Earlier this month it was reported that SIGET plans to finally introduce number portability in February next year, with a tender to be launched next month to select a portability administrator.
