Tigo Extends Coverage to 10 More Districts

Nov 29, 2010 (The New Times/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- Tigo Rwanda has expanded its network coverage to 10 districts and also announced the re-launch of the Rwf10 per minute promotion.

The Muhima based telecom company said, on Tuesday, that by October this year it has increased network coverage to Bugesera, Gatsibo, Gicumbi, Gisagara, Huye and Kamonyi. Other newly connect areas on Tigo's 2G networks include Nyaruguru, Rubavu, Rutsiro and Rwamagana.

Nina Ndabaneze told Business Times that the company is also bound to carry out a survey that will help indentify which areas should be connected as priority areas.

She added that, Tigo is committed to its license obligations of covering at least 80 percent of the population by the end of this year.

"We are increasing our coverage in new districts while in other already connected districts we are enhancing it," she said.

"This promotion was re-launched as a Christmas gift to our clients and since we are celebrating our one year anniversary, we are also recognising our growth." Statistics from the telecom regulator, Rwanda Utility and Regulatory Agency (RURA) released recently indicate that in the third quarter of this year, Tigo had already attracted over 600,000 mobile phone subscribers since its launch in Rwanda, the making it the second most subscribed mobile company.

RURA figures indicate that as of September 2010 there were 3.6 million mobile phone subscribers in Rwanda, which represent 36.1 percent of the population connected. Out of this coverage MTN lead with 23.9 percent teledensity, Tigo followed with 6.9 percent, while Rwandatel registered a teledensity of 5.4 percent.

The newly re-launched Tigo promotion now referred to as 'Vuga Vuga' meaning 'Talk Talk' benefits only Tigo subscribers calling Tigo line. The promotion was dropped recently in favour of more exciting promotion which the market didn't respond to positively.
