Tigers' Inge is likely to play second base

Apr 13, 2012 (Detroit Free Press - McClatchy-Tribune News Service via COMTEX) -- The Tigers said infielder Brandon Inge will join the team on Saturday in Chicago.

Manager Jim Leyland said Inge likely will start at second base Sunday against White Sox left-hander Chris Sale.

Left-hander Adam Wilk also will join the Tigers on Saturday and is scheduled to start against Chicago right-hander Gavin Floyd.

To make room for Inge and Wilk, infielder Danny Worth and right-handed reliever Brayan Villarreal were sent to Triple-A Toledo.

Villarreal struck out the only batter he faced in Friday's 5-2 loss at U.S. Cellular Field.

Worth went 1-for-5 and scored a run in three games.

Inge was 1-for-9 in three games for the Mud Hens during a rehab assignment from a strained left groin he suffered in spring training.

When asked about Inge on Friday, Leyland said: "Made a couple plays. He had one hit. He's fine physically." TRY IT ON: Max Scherzer tried on Rick Porcello's glove Friday. He also tried on Collin Balester's . In fact, Friday's starter slid his hand into several of his right-handed teammates' gloves before the game.

He left his glove in Detroit and he didn't realize it until he went to warm up before the game. Finally, after going through several gloves, he found one that was similar to his: Justin Verlander's .

And so, in his second start of the season, Scherzer used Verlander's glove during the game.

He was somewhat sheepish about it afterward, no doubt hoping no one would notice. Word got out however when astute viewers noticed Verlander's markings on the glove while watching on television.

STRIKING BACK: Tigers' pitchers struck out a season-high 15. Though Detroit is in first place in the Central Division at 5-2, no starter on the team has a win. Tigers starters have a combined 3.18 ERA and two losses in seven games. Scherzer fanned 11 _ the seventh time he has had at least 10 strikeouts.
