[May 18, 2013] Thunder outlast rain to take two from Macks Tweet May 18, 2013 (The Leader-Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- CHIPPEWA FALLS -- It wasn't until the rain let up that the Thunder started to roar. Osseo-Fairchild trailed 7-4 after two wet, soggy innings before coming from behind and scoring the winning run in the bottom of the fifth after the rain stopped for an 11-10 victory. The Thunder jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap and held on for a 10-8 win to sweep a doubleheader from McDonell in Western Cloverbelt action Friday at Casper Park. With both games being played in wet, cold conditions, they were sloppy at times. The teams combined for 12 errors in the first game and 13 walks in game two. But the Thunder survived and extended their winning streak to six games. "The conditions weren't that good," Thunder coach Matt Korger said. "But if you want to go on a winning streak, you have to win some games like this, because that's baseball." The Thunder (8-5, 9-2) found themselves in a big hole right away. Four errors, three walks and one hit, a two-run single by Kendall Dorn, led to a seven-run top of the second for McDonell (5-6, 5-5), which took a 7-2 lead. The Macks committed two errors of their own in the bottom of the inning that led to two runs for the Thunder. "I thought, let's do the same thing to them," Korger said. "Be patient at the plate, see what happens." That patience paid off in the bottom of the fourth inning. With the rain nearly stopped, the Thunder took a 9-7 lead with five runs in the inning, capped by a three-run triple by Chance Carlson. The Macks fought back and took the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth. Sam Sorenson tied the game with a two-run single before the go-ahead run scored on a wild pitch. But two more errors by the Macks helped the Thunder win it in the bottom of the inning without the benefit of a hit. McDonell finished the game with eight errors. "We've been hitting the ball all year," Macks coach Eric Wedemeyer said, "But when you can't catch a ball and can't field it, you're not going to win baseball games." The Thunder scored in every inning of game two and took a 10-3 lead into the bottom of the fifth, when the Macks scored five runs and had the tying run at first with one out before Sam Waters struck out the final two batters to end the game. Karl Peterson and Cal Freitag each had three hits and combined for five RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Thunder offense. Don Loew had two hits and two RBIs for the Macks. The Thunder showed off a much better defense that made some tough plays in game two. "That's more indicative of how we've been playing," Korger said.
