Telenet Opts for Teradata Logical Data Model

Apr 13, 2009 (Close-Up Media via COMTEX) -- Telenet, a Belgian provider of media and telecommunication services, has selected Teradata, a company solely focused on data warehousing and enterprise analytics, to build a new data warehouse, which will become the foundation for more in-depth analysis of Telenet's telecom, internet and digital TV customers.

In a release, the company noted: The single integrated view of customers will allow Telenet to better serve their customers with offers and pricing while also maximizing corporate profits.

The core of the project is the Teradata Communications Logical Data Model (LDM), an advanced data model that enables communication companies to better model their business and customer data for in-depth analysis. Telenet will shortly start implementing the LDM in building the data warehouse. This will be a several year's journey with intermediate business deliveries every three to four months.

Telenet's Business Intelligence Competence Center (BICC) acts as an internal service provider that feeds all Telenet divisions with analysis of customer information, such as sales and user data, customer loyalty and call center statistics. Telenet selected the Teradata Communications LDM as a crucial component in better modeling and centralizing customer data across these different areas and functions for sophisticated insightful analysis.

"For Telenet, this is a very important strategic step," said Stefan Kennis, director of the BICC. "We investigated several suppliers, but Teradata clearly offered us the most mature model and also presented excellent references. Their model will become the basis of our new data warehouse that will offer Telenet important added value and help us improve our customer service in general. Our ambition is to become a superior Business Intelligence Competence Center in the Telecom sector and to act as a reference in the BI world. To reach that goal, we are constantly upgrading the skills of our BI employees and expanding our team with talented BI experts." The communications sector is one of many vertical industries where Teradata offers a Logical Data Model. This model is the basis for advanced analysis of customer data, coming from all corners of the company, including invoicing, call center, network usage and customer loyalty. This analysis offers a communications company a big picture of the complete organization, thus enabling it to better serve its customers. The ten largest telecommunications companies in the world use a Teradata data warehouse.

Gunther Roobaert, Teradata managing director for Belgium, explains the increased interest in logical data models, "The Teradata Logical Data Model and Teradata Professional Services eases the path for Telenet to integrate the various data sources into one single integrated environment, thereby creating a building block for future business intelligence projects such as Active Data Warehousing for better operational management. Today, our industry Logical Data Models are very popular in banking and insurance, communications, and retail in Belgium. In addition, several other vertical markets, such as the utility sector, are starting to recognize the need for better modeling to enable sharper analysis of their customers and company."
