TeamChildren to Make 500 Low-Cost, High-Quality Refurbished Computers Available This Holiday Season

AUDUBON, Pa., Nov. 21, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- TeamChildren founder Robert Toporek doesn't look like Santa Claus but this holiday season his nonprofit will light up the lives of at least 500 economically challenged families, teachers and nonprofit organizations by offering refurbished desktop computers and laptops to people who cannot afford to purchase a new computer.

Loaded with over $500 worth of software, TeamChildren's computers introduce children to a new world of learning, with software that can teach toddlers reading, math and music to programs that help college students excel.

With minimal funding and a mostly volunteer staff, TeamChildren has distributed more than 15,000 low-cost, high-quality refurbished computers to families, schools and organizations in the Philadelphia region. As a result, more than 75,000 kids have improved their academic, economic and social futures.

Hector Ivan Colon, who grew up in one of Philadelphia's most impoverished communities at the corner of 9th and Indiana, was one of the first to get a computer. With his parents only having a grade school education, the likelihood of Hector graduating in the top 10 percent of his class and receiving a bachelor's degree from Millersville University in 2016 was slim to none. But he beat the odds, with TeamChildren's help.

To Receive a Computer

To receive a computer, write the organization a letter outlining your financial need and how a computer will help you. Include your full name, address, phone number and, if possible, a family photograph.

Pay the administrative fee:

Desktops:            $65 or $140

Laptops:               $100-$185 (when available)

Recipients are asked to volunteer for a short period of time when they pick up their computer.

How You Can Help

Donate Equipment: Thanks to recent donations of equipment from Wawa, SEI, Johnson Matthey, Acme, and many more companies and individuals, TeamChildren is able to distribute another 500 computers this holiday season. The organization is always searching for more donations of equipment.

Volunteers are at the heart of its success: From senior citizens to teens in high school, TeamChildren is always looking for new volunteers especially in the area of administration, marketing, public relations, fundraising, data management, and computer repair. If you have a skill, TeamChildren can use your help.

Contribute financially. What TeamChildren has learned over the years is that every financial contribution, whether big or small, helps a local child.
