Strix Wins Korean Intelligent Highway Project

Strix Systems (News - Alert) won the deployment for Korea's intelligent highway infrastructure project with it's Access/One Outdoor Wireless System (OWS). The 3,000 kilometer stretch of highway is a multi-phase, multi-year nationwide highway project between Korea’s two largest cities of Seoul and Pusan utilizing wireless mesh networking technology for delivery of multimedia applications to and from consumer and public safety vehicles.

“We have not seen such a large area deployment of wireless mesh network with WLAN technology in the world.” said Kim, Hongchol, Manager, Korean Highway Corp. at the interview with Korea Electronic Times on May 26.

TTA (News - Alert), Korean public standard organization, hosted testing performed by the WLAN highway project of Korean Highway Corp. All major industry competitors were included in the testing. Many dropped out when they couldn't complete the tests, however, Strix Access/One OWS achieved more than double the backhaul throughput and also reset the expectations for the maximum speed test threshold from 100km/h by exceeding 180km/h.

“Strix wireless mesh solution is impressive. We’ve already seen that it out-performs the competitors, but streaming megapixel video across 4 wireless hops at 180 kilometers per hour is amazing, and we know it can do more.” said Henry Jung, Marketing Director, Broadwave, Inc.

Strix Access/One gives the Korean digital highway infrastructure the ability to deliver over Wi-Fi wireless broadband - multimedia video, voice and data applications including watching traffic conditions, news reports, travel information and high-quality broadcast TV over IP delivered through existing and new intelligent vehicle electronics, end-user and other Wi-Fi enabled devices.

Public safety will take advantage of Strix high-speed infrastructure for video surveillance installed along the highway, to and from vehicles, and specific public safety data and voice over IP enabled applications.

“Our experience is that Strix delivers the greatest return on investment – it’s an enabler for opportunities in railway, sea ports, intelligent transportation systems and other mobility environments.” Jung concluded.

Strix Systems distributor, Broadwave Inc. and partners POSDATA (News - Alert) and Hyundai HDS are important components to the success of the initial testing and ongoing project by providing their industry and technical expertise.
