[October 10, 2006] Stolen ASC laptop holds student data Tweet (Pueblo Chieftain, The (CO) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Oct. 10--ALAMOSA - A laptop computer stolen from Adams State College contained personal data on participants in the college's Upward Bound program. The laptop and an LCD projector were reported stolen from a locked closet in the administration building on Aug. 14, but it wasn't until last month that the staff realized the computer held a report listing 184 high school students who participated in the federally funded Upward Bound program during the past four years. Upward Bound works with low-income, first-generation high school students to improve their potential for college success. The data was contained in Upward Bound's annual performance report, updated each year, but the report isn't kept on personal computers any longer, said Mike Garcia, executive director of ASC's TRIO program of which Upward Bound is a part. The college has notified the affected students of the theft and advised them of steps to take to protect their information, including placing fraud alerts on their credit reports. A college spokesman said there is no evidence that the crime was one of identity theft, and the investigation is continuing.
