Stanley Tomchin Donates to Greenpeace for Research in the Bering Sea(Marketwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) SANTA BARBARA, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/15/14 -- Greenpeace is celebrating a victory in the battle against the British supermarket chain Tesco and the low priced tuna brand Oriental & Pacific. The campaign, which was launched in early March, requested Tesco to stop selling the tuna brand, which uses controversial fish aggregating devices instead of the more environmentally friendly and sustainable pole-and-line method. Now Greenpeace announced in a press release that the producers of Oriental & Pacific informed Greenpeace that starting April 2015 they will exclusively sell sustainably sourced tuna. Ariana Densham from Greenpeace UK was thrilled about the news: "Their tinned tuna is caught using a method that kills sharks, rays and turtles, but next year that will end. That means this dodgy tuna will no longer be found on the shelves of Britain's biggest supermarket." The campaign against the tuna sold by Tesco is only one of many projects Greenpeace is working on in order to protect the world's seas and oceans and the creatures living in it. Another body of water that has been in the organization's focus for years is the Bering Sea. The Bearing Sea spans over 770,000 square miles between the Siberian coast and Alaska and is the source for more than half the seafood that is caught in the United States. Excessive fishing, however, poses a threat to the food supply for birds and marine mammals, while unregulated fishing devices destroy the fragile corals. Greenpeace has been fighting for the creation of Marine Protected Areas in that region to preserve the natural habitat of thousands of species. In 2007, Greenpeace entered into a partnership with independent science to research available solutions and present them to policy makers. Realizing how important this undertaking is, Stanley Tomchin, made a considerable donation to Greenpeace through his foundation to support the efforts of the organization. Greenpeace is a worldwide active organization with the goal to change the behavior and attitudes of people, companies and governments around the globe in order to protect the environment and to foster peace. Greenpeace does not accept funding from corporations, governments or political parties to maintain its independence and integrity and therefore has to rely on private donations. When Greenpeace received a donation of $75,000 from Stanley Tomchin's foundation, the organization ran an online donation drive, which raised an additional $150,000 resulting in the impressive total amount of $225,000 that went into the ongoing research efforts in the Bering Sea. The donation to Greenpeace is only one of many projects that Stanley Tomchin supports. The Las Vegas-based professional games player who once represented the United States in the bridge Olympiad, has left his bridge and poker playing days behind him and is now dedicating his life to philanthropic causes. Inspired by his luck and care for others, he supports larger organizations as well as local charities, many of them based in Las Vegas, where Stan is a part-time resident. One of those organizations it the Marty Hennessy Jr. Tennis Foundation, which supports disadvantaged children in Las Vegas through introducing them to tennis, mentoring them and providing them with education, allowing Stan to combine two of his biggest passions: tennis and philanthropy.
