Sony Develops Plug, Socket Capable of Gauging Power Use [Jiji Press English News Service]
(Jiji Press English News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Tokyo, Feb. 14 (Jiji Press)--Sony Corp. said Tuesday it has developed a plug and socket set that can identify owners and appliances and gauge power use.
The Japanese electronics maker hopes to commercialize a system that combines power consumption data accumulated through the technology with a function to automatically control power supply.
Sony used its proprietary FeliCa integrated circuit card technology to embed IC chips in plugs of appliances and electric vehicles. It installed corresponding signal readers in the sockets.
Sony also developed a technology that allows electronics fitted with IC chips and sockets with signal readers to swap data through power lines.
The company believes these technologies can be used in various ways, such as paying for utility bills using e-money.
Sony plans to collaborate with other electronics manufacturers and house builders to promote the technologies at home and abroad.END
