Solomons quiet after riots

(UPI Top Stories Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Solomon Islands officials said investigators are trying to determine if politicians opposed to Prime Minister Snyder Rini helped foment riots.

Two days of violent protests left parts of the capital city devastated. Hundreds of Chinese business owners were living in a hastily set-up refugee camp after being burned out, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

China chartered a plane to evacuate 90 of its citizens.

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer visited the Solomons for a meeting with Rini.

Economic reform is going to be central to the survival of the country, Downer said.

The rioting began last week after Rini was chosen as prime minister.
