Solomon Islands erupts in violence following election of new PM


(Asia In Focus Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)HONIARA, April 19 Asia in Focus - Angry reactions to the election of a new prime minister in Solomon Islands spilled onto the streets of the capital, Honiara, yesterday with many shops smashed and looted. SIBC news director, Walter Nalangu confirmed to PACNEWS that two vehicles, including a RAMSI police patrol car had been torched by angry members of the public who opposed the appointment of Snyder Rini.



* "Things are getting out of control here in the city. Outside parliament a vehicle was burnt and a RAMSI (Regional Assistance Mission in Solomon Islands) car was also torched," Mr Nalangu said.

* Mr Rini was elected in a closed session of parliament this morning in a close tussle with Joseph Dudley Tausinga.
