Smith Micro Unveils Mobile Broadband Interface Model Software at Mobile World Congress 2013

ALISO VIEJO, CA, Feb 25, 2013 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Smith Micro Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMSI) announced today the availability of its new QuickLink(R) MBIM Middleware for chipset vendors and device manufacturers. The Mobile Broadband Interface Model (MBIM) standard for broadband connectivity, developed by the USB Implementers Forum with contributions from Smith Micro, was first commercialized on broadband devices supporting Windows 8. QuickLink MBIM Middleware extends MBIM functionality to Windows 7 and other operating systems. This provides backward compatibility between new USB and embedded modems with prior versions of Windows and reduces support burden from legacy operating systems in the market.

"The new MBIM standard is a step forward for mobile broadband connectivity, but many device makers and operators are concerned about new broadband devices supporting operating systems other than Windows 8," said Dave Sperling, CTO of Smith Micro Software. "Having dealt with multi-platform support for decades, we saw the opportunity to extend the MBIM interface to more platforms in a way that would benefit many players in the ecosystem. For example, the use of QuickLink by mobile chip vendors will help OEMs and wireless operators launch mobile broadband devices faster and deliver a true plug-and-play experience to subscribers." Smith Micro's QuickLink MBIM Middleware brings the following benefits to the market: -- Eliminates the need by OEMs to develop costly operating system and device-specific drivers -- Simplifies development of advanced M2M solutions and services by standardizing the broadband modem interface -- Streamlines the certification of new mobile broadband devices in operator test labs -- Reduces support costs by eliminating driver conflicts on legacy devices -- Improves the "out of box" user experience by enabling plug-and-play for USB modems Smith Micro's QuickLink MBIM Middleware provides support for: -- Windows 7, Vista and XP -- Mac OSX -- Linux -- USB-IF MBIM 1.0 specification -- Extensibility through MBIM's Device Service Stream model This new technology is part of Smith Micro's QuickLink family of solutions that help make broadband connectivity easier, more reliable and more secure.
