Sikhs at clock tower call for Indian reform


(Leicester Mercury Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Leicester: Sikhs will gather at the Clock Tower from 5pm to 7pm tomorrow on Tuesday, January 17, in a candlelit vigil being observed by Sikhs across the world.

They are calling for the end of the death penalty in India and the release of all Sikh political prisoners held there.

It is being staged by the Sikh Federation, which calls itself the first and only Sikh political party in the UK.

More than 100 cities worldwide and 15 in the UK will be involved.

Other organisations involved include the National Council of Gurdwaras, Khalsa Human Rights, Sikh Secretariat, Young Sikhs (UK), World Sikh Organisation, International Sikh Youth Federation, and Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar).

The vigils are being supported by Amnesty International and other members of the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty.

The vigil in London will be held outside the Houses of Parliament in Westminster between 5pm and 7pm.

The vigils coincide with the 11th anniversary of one of the most controversial and highest profile death penalty cases in recent Indian history when Professor Davinderpal Singh Bhullar was deported from Germany to India where he is on death row.



HINCKLEY: A Burns Night dinner is to be held at Ashby Road Sports Club on January 28 from 6.30pm to about 11.30pm.

In keeping with tradition, the meal will consist of cock-a-leekie soup, haggis, tatties and neeps and roast beef.


Piper Richard Japp will herald the arrival of the top table guests and the haggis.

ELLISTOWN: The parish council agreed to appoint litter wardens so that litter-louts can be fined and is to contact North West Leicestershire District Council about bins for dog mess.

Castle Donington: A Burns Night is to be held at St Edward's Church hall on Saturday, January 21. Tickets, costing GBP10, can be booked from Julie or Alex Logan, on 01332 810756.

Birstall: The village's dog warden is on the look-out for owners who do not clear up after their dogs.

In recent weeks the warden has issued six GBP50 penalty notes.

SAPCOTE: Morning service at Sapcote Methodist Church at 10.30am on Sunday , January 15 will be the annual Covenant Service.
