SGI upgrades Rackable servers with AMD Opteron 6300 processor

Nov 23, 2012 (Datamonitor via COMTEX) -- Silicon Graphics International Corp., or SGI, has announced that it is upgrading its Rackable servers powered by AMD Opteron processors with the latest AMD Opteron 6300 series processors.

These servers are in use across a range of applications, including astrophysics, earth sciences, including climatology and seismology, computer-aided design, and Cloud storage. The new AMD Opteron 6300 Series processors strike the ultimate balance between scalability and cost effectiveness to help IT organizations lower total cost of ownership (TCO), the company said.

Performance per watt is up to 37 percent higher than the prior generation solutions, which means that datacenters running large-scale software deployments will be able to enjoy the high performance as well as the low TCO. AMD continues to drive HPC performance with the 6300 Series processors using optimizations in compilers and libraries combined with the next-generation core architecture.

SGI Rackable servers powered by AMD Opteron processors are offered in completely managed solutions built from components tested and integrated by SGI Engineering. The solutions include SGI Management Center and SGI Performance Suite software for easy administration and performance optimization as well as SGI InfiniteStorage NAS and direct-attach storage.

SGI Rackable clusters for HPC, Big Data, and Cloud are fully integrated and tested in SGI's manufacturing facility located in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin and supported worldwide by SGI. AMD Opteron 6300 series processors are offered in three configurations: SGI Rackable 2108, SGI Rackable 2112, and SGI Rackable H2106.

"AMD Opteron processor solutions provide excellent investment return for customers doing scientific research, Cloud computing and product development," said Bill Mannel, vice president of product marketing at SGI. "The AMD Opteron 6000 Series processors have industry-leading core counts that allow clusters to achieve optimal price-performance and power savings." http://www.datamonitor.com Republication or redistribution, including by framing or similar means, is expressly prohibited without prior written consent.
