Serial renal dynamic scans assessed renal function in patients with Wilms tumors(Science Letter Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Serial renal dynamic scans (RDS) could be used to assess renal function in patients with bilateral Wilms tumors. "Serial renal dynamic scans (RDS) were performed in a child with bilateral Wilms tumor to assess renal function. Baseline RDS, apart from detecting the tumors as large photopenic areas in the renal fossae, revealed well preserved function in the upper pole of the right kidney and non visualization of the left kidney," investigators in India reported. "Left tumor enucleation was done. Follow-up RDS showed good radiotracer uptake suggestive of functioning parenchyma in the upper part of the left kidney that was not seen on the earlier scan. RDS was repeated after similar surgery on the right side, which also revealed good function and drainage," explained M. Chawla and colleagues, All India Institute of Medical Sciences. The researchers concluded that "RDS is a good modality to assess renal function after surgery in patients with Wilms tumor." Chawla and colleagues published their study in Clinical Nuclear Medicine (Serial renal dynamic scintigraphy in evaluation of renal function in patient with bilateral Wilms' tumors.
