Samsung, LG, and SK Telecom to jointly develop chips

Jul 29, 2009 (Datamonitor via COMTEX) -- Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and SK Telecom have announced plans to work together with other local companies in South Korea to develop semiconductors for high-tech digital appliances.

Samsung and LG will develop global digital TV receiver chips, and SK will work with chip design company Xronet to produce a wireless connectivity system-on-chip for smart phones. LG will use Samsung's foundry to make chips for its digital TVs.

The companies will work with the South Korean government, which plans to provide KRW 6.8 billion ($5.4m) for the project, while the private sector has pledged to inject KRW 6.5 billion ($5.2m).

Park Tae-sung, head of Korea's Ministry of Knowledge Economy semiconductor industries division, said: "LG and smaller partner companies will design the chips, with Samsung manufacturing and testing the finished products." He said that if the tie-up is successful the country could save KRW 300 billion ($240m) on imports.
